Rachel and I had known of each other socially for years, we weren’t friends yet but I had a respect and a warmth for her when I reached out to her after a particularly challenging time in my life. We had a fresh coconut on a Bali beach and I shared the stories of my recent challenges. I had just been through a lot of public media, telling my story of nearly losing my life to medical mesh; as a creative writer I was toying with the idea of writing a book about my experience and my life over the last 50 years. This felt like a monumental challenge when my health was still poor and I wasn’t through the worst of it yet. I had written 2 chapters in The Australian Autism Handbook about my journey with my son and my clients through the maze of Autism, so I knew I could do it, but alone would have been too intense, my story was too raw and it felt like a huge mountain to climb alone. Rachel talked me through her journeys with others, writing their life stories and the magic in the process. It felt divinely lead that she reached out at just the right time to be there. We agreed to begin Skype sessions, as we were living in different countries, and see how the process flowed. Well it did. The sessions found a synergetic groove instantly and having Rachel bear witness to all my innermost secrets, thoughts about myself and my life’s journey were taking form in chapters of the book. Rachel’s empathy for my journey deepened my own and allowed me to face and expose the most shameful feelings about my story and my life so far. Her crafting of messages and words were masterful and it was like I was telling the story with an elevated eloquence that she brought to the table in every chapter. It was a deeply intimate journey to undertake, and the rewards were infinite, she was always on the “same page” when we discussed progress, tones, flavours and the outcomes. I will be forever grateful to Rachel for her grounded and systematic approach with the buckets of heart and love she offered me, her patience with my process was unshakable and she picked me up when it felt simply too hard to take another step … Justine Watson, “An Abominable Mesh”

Rachel, I have just cast my eye over that copy and it looks absolutely fabulous. You are the only writer so far who seems to have managed to read the whole brief and file the copy exactly as it should be. Is it too early in our relationship to say I love you? Well, your writing at least. Work like yours just makes my job sooooo much easier.
Regards,
Deborah
